There are plenty of college students out there today who are taking marketing classes in hopes of becoming a social media manager after graduation, but being a social media manager is not all fun and games as some may think. There is actually work involved in being a social media manager, and like any job, it has a few downsides.
Nobody will truly think that you’re an expert
People today are still ignorant about social media, and they have skewed views of what skills and qualifications a social media manager has. Plenty of people think that anyone with a Facebook account could manage a company’s social media presence, and you will spend countless hours trying to defend the fact that your job requires more than sitting on Twitter all day.
You’ll be on call
Social media is on the Internet, and the Internet doesn’t sleep. This means that even though you’ll be using social media monitoring tools, you’ll be required to work after your work day is over. If a customer posts a nasty comment on your company’s wall, you’ll need to take action to alleviate the situation before it spirals out of control. This means that the lovely evening you had planned with your spouse could be ruined by the rantings of an unhappy customer.
You’ll put your own social media on hold
When your job requires you to use social media for your company all day every day, you will not want to spend time on your own personal social media accounts. To some people, this may not be that big of a deal, but if you use social media to stay in touch with family and friends or to follow your favorite sports teams, celebrities or brands, it could have a big effect on you.
You need to constantly be in the know
In order to execute a brilliant social media strategy, you need to constantly remain in the know throughout your office. You need to know about all the products and services you offer. You need to know about sales and promotions that are currently going on. And you may even need to dig into the personal lives of your co-workers.
You also need to stay in the know about the latest social media updates and platforms. If Facebook launches a new upgrade, you’ll need to know how to best use it for your business. If MySpace really does take off, you’ll need to know how to get your business on the network and how to leverage it.
There’s no job security
Yes, right now social media is hot, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to stay this way forever. In a few years, something else may be developed that pushes social media off the grid. Once your company realizes that they no longer need social media in order to be successful, you can kiss your job goodbye.
Being a social media manager can be a fun and important job, but there are disadvantages. Before you decide to apply for that social media manager job because you think it will be a piece of cake, you’ll first want to consider these disadvantages.
